Self Defence Course
Information Kit for participants
When Inner Circle Academy runs its famous 4 week Basic Self Defence courses, there are always lots of questions
Details of the course Times, Dates and Locations are sent to participants at the time of booking.
There is additional information you should be aware of before commencing. This should answer most of your questions. If not, please ask.
Bookings are essential. You can book right up until the day of the course and add additional participants if there is room available
In this course you will be taught a number of self defence techniques and concepts that will cover a broad range of violent and adverse situations typically found in modern suburban settings
It is not possible to learn an entire martial arts system in a month, however it is absolutely achievable to pass on basic survival skills to a workable level in 8 hours of intensive training.
It takes 1 or 2 years of regular training with specific targeted outcomes to get to a level where you can confidently handle most threats and adverse situations.
Most people, males and females, severely overrate their ability to handle themselves in a violent encounter. Males 89% Females 74%.
People think that they will be able to fight off attackers using their strength or aggression or in the worst case, tricky moves they have seen on the internet, unproven junk moves sold by unscrupulous franchise systems or fancy but impractical technique taught by a well meaning family member.
In the entire history of martial arts, this has never ended in a positive manner. 95% of internet martial art / franchise system is pure bunkum and does not work outside of the dojo. The 5% that might work, you, the inexperienced novice, has no way to determine which 5% might work.
This course sets the record straight. We teach you technique that is absolutely proven to work, in realistic conditions, and within which limits it will work. We then let you test it yourself to see and feel it working. And then we give you back up, escalated techniques for when basic techniques do not produce intended outcomes.
I understand that this statement may be confronting, but you need to hear this:
In summary, you can not learn everything in a month, but you absolutely can learn the bare bones basics that could help you survive and your only other option is to have zero skills and keep believing a magical fighting ability will arrive when needed.
The course itself is safe and mostly fun and exiting.
It is quite a physical course but can be customised for any fitness level and condition
Because of the confronting content. Juniors must have an adult on site, preferably on the mat with them.
If this is NOT possible, prior arrangement must be made
The course is suitable for all sizes shapes fitness levels and abilities.
There are no prerequisites to this course.
If you have limitations or need to exclude some activities (for any reason), advise your instructor at the beginning of each session
There will be female instructors available to conduct any sensitive techniques however students are encouraged to attempt some of the key anti abduction techniques on male instructors to ensure that you understand your competency level.
It is best to complete all sessions as they build on each other however the sessions are split into 2 Basics and 2 Advanced. Techniques are not repeated. If you miss a lesson you miss out.
Attending the first 2 sessions will give some benefit however you will get most benefit by attending all 4.
Unless you already have significant martial arts exposure, attending only lesson 3 & 4 will give you limited benefit, and attending only the first 2 will not cover advanced skills. You will get some benefit but nowhere near the maximum effect.
During the course, many people will experience emotional context. This is very normal. We are discussing your life and personal safety, so some discussions and concept will make you feel uncomfortable.
If you are especially susceptible to this please let your instructor know. There are many topics covered and for you, these may be within your comfort zone however we completely understand that some concepts will be on the edge of or outside of other's comfort zones.
If you or your family members have issues with noise, close social contact or other anxiety triggers, please prepare yourself. Let your instructor know ahead of time and discuss ways to alleviate progression. we can always find work arounds and catch up solutions and happy to do private smaller classes for vulnerable participants, but ask you to do as much as you can in class.
There is quite a lot of physicality in the course. It is full contact and some techniques can cause pain. The pain is always temporary, mild and tolerable. If they don't hurt they don't work. However we have several ways to ensure that all techniques are within your tolerances and many ways to reduce your risks. My team of helpers is very experienced and can adapt any technique to your limitations or restrictions.
Please note: 1000s of people have completed this course and no one has ever gone home injured nor been unable to continue a session. This a low risk course. If you have conditions, limitations or injuries, its up to you to let us know, we have always been able to find work arounds and modified technique solutions that still give you the best possible outcome.
Some of the content is uncomfortable (at best) however the long term self defence benefits are immeasurable and for the most part, the course is fun exciting and fast & easy to learn. We have hundreds of 5 star ratings and many student repeat the course..
